SAN ANTONIO (February 10, 2026) – Today, Mayor Jones hosted an early learning and childcare roundtable with District 6 Councilmember Ric Galvan, inviting experts from across the education and childcare sector to identify key priorities where the city can help ensure high-quality and affordable early learning for every child.

“As Mayor, one of my priorities is investing in smart, healthy kids because our children are our future. This is an equity issue and an economic issue. These priorities are essential to reducing poverty and strengthening long-term economic competitiveness for our people and our city,” said Mayor Jones. “By diving into these issues facing our community, we can create immediate, actionable steps for increasing capacity, affordability, and quality of early childhood education and childcare services.”

The roundtable brought together experts from the education and childcare sector to review recommendations from the SA Child Care study by Texas A&M San Antonio to identify key policy recommendations. The organizations participating in the roundtable included representatives from Department of Human Services (DHS), Head Start Policy Council, AVANCE, Early Matters, Healy Murphy, Pre-K 4 SA, Lindsay’s Lilypads, Kids R Kids, St. Lutheran Child Development Center, Imagination Childcare Center, Books & Bibs, Texas A&M San Antonio, and the Barshop Jewish Community Center.

“I’m grateful that this council has a renewed focus on strengthening educational outcomes in our city, including access to high-quality, affordable early childhood education,” said Councilmember Galvan. “High-quality childcare is essential for working families to move up the economic ladder and for our kids to meet their full potential. It’s what San Antonio families deserve.”

Coming out of the roundtable, the Mayor’s team will prepare a report and a timeline for moving forward based on the feedback during the meeting.
