Johnston Branch Library opened on San Antonio’s southwest side in 1981 and was renovated in 1996, including a 3,000-square-foot expansion. The location was named after Leah Carter Johnston, SAPL’s first children’s librarian. In 1927, Johnston created the Young Pegasus Poetry Competition, the first of its kind in the United States. Young Pegasus is now entering its 99th year, providing a platform for young poets to share their work.
Located in San Antonio City Council District 4 near Lackland Air Force Base, the Johnston Branch serves a diverse community, including military families and the families and students who attend schools in nearby San Antonio ISD, Southwest ISD, and South San ISD.
