SAN ANTONIO (September 16, 2025) – San Antonio’s Complete Streets and Transit-Oriented Development policies will be front and center in a makeover of Houston Street for International Park(ing) Day, a global project where people temporarily convert parking spaces into public parks and social spaces for art, play, and innovation. The celebration is a collaboration with Centro San Antonio, the 80|20 Foundation and the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Houston Street between Main Street and Flores Street will be open to foot traffic but closed to vehicles on September 19 for the block party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Various City of San Antonio departments and vendors will be located along the route, creating a streetscape design resembling a mock-up of a slice of the VIA Green Line and its walkshed. For more information, visit the City’s website.
“National Park(ing) Day allows us to show the public what happens when streets are designed safer for everyone – from bus transit to pedestrians, to bike riders and drivers,” said Catherine “Cat” Hernandez, Director of the City’s Transportation Department. “Think of it as a street fair, showcasing the best in designing communities around transit hubs.”
Park(ing) Day’s theme this year is “Curb the Power: Micro Acts of Civil Joy.” Visitors will be given passports and can earn prizes by visiting the various booths along the route and getting their passports stamped.
“Park(ing) Day is about reimagining what our streets can be; places for people and creativity,” said Trish DeBerry, President and CEO of Centro San Antonio. “Our mission is to keep downtown clean, safe, and welcoming, and events like this help us envision what’s possible when we design for community.”
