District 9 Councilwoman Draws the Line on Property Tax Increase

SAN ANTONIO (August 12, 2026) — In advance of upcoming property tax rate discussions at City Council, District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears released the following statement:

“I cannot support raising property taxes on District 9 residents. Property taxes should be an absolute last resort,” said the District 9 Councilwoman. “This is my line in the sand: I will not support increasing the property tax rate. Taxpayers are already facing proposed SAWS rate increases, possible CPS Energy increases, a 2027 bond program and higher everyday costs. City Hall should not respond to a budget shortfall by automatically asking families and businesses to pay more.”

The District 9 Councilwoman said the City must focus on its core responsibilities, including public safety, infrastructure, and essential services.

“We must balance this budget by cutting wasteful spending, eliminating programs that are not delivering results, and holding every department, line item, and dollar accountable. We also have to protect the services residents rely on, including police and fire protection, streets and drainage and sidewalks. This shortfall will not be fixed overnight, but higher property taxes are not the answer.”

The District 9 Councilwoman will continue pushing for a responsible budget that protects essential services without putting an unnecessary burden on San Antonio taxpayers.
