District 9 Councilwoman Addresses U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Operations with Commitment to Law and Compassion

SAN ANTONIO (January 22, 2026) – Councilwoman Misty Spears issued the following statement underscoring the responsibility of local government to lead with clarity and restraint amid ongoing federal enforcement activity.

“Local government has a responsibility to provide calm, clarity, and confidence to the people we serve. When our actions or rhetoric create fear—fear of going to work or fear of sending children to school—we are not meeting that responsibility,” said the Councilwoman.

The Councilwoman noted that federal law enforcement agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), are carrying out lawful duties focused on individuals who pose public safety risks, and cautioned against mischaracterizing these efforts through speculative or inflammatory narratives that can unnecessarily heighten anxiety in the community.

“As an elected official, I fully support the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in their lawful collaborations with federal agencies,” the Councilwoman said. “While ICE conducts its duties, my focus is ensuring that our local law enforcement is empowered to protect our city.”

The Councilwoman emphasized that San Antonio’s leadership and messaging matter beyond city limits.

“San Antonio is a major American city, and the nation is watching,” the Councilwoman said. “We should be sending a clear message that we support law enforcement, respect the law, and will not contribute to unnecessary panic in our community.”
