SAN ANTONIO (August 4, 2023) — Yesterday, City Council approved Phase One of the Brackenridge Park project. District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito released the following statement:

“Like so many San Antonians, I grew up going to Brackenridge Park and still use this park today, as a runner and a mother. Parks and greenspaces should offer a safe, educational, and accessible experience for our families.

Recently touring Brackenridge Park served as a reminder that it hasn’t had significant investment in some time. Areas of the park where children play are aging. At a certain point, we must balance protecting nature from people, while also protecting people from nature. With that in mind, I am not opposed to upgrading the park, and support Phase One of the Brackenridge Park Project.

This wonderful space should be used to educate our children and future generations and offer a safe environment to our residents seeking tranquility.

It is important to acknowledge the concerns of our residents who feel an important connection to the park. We will work together in the next phases of the park upgrade and seek to find common ground.”
