SAN ANTONIO (June 18, 2026) – Today, City Council voted to delay a proposal to raise San Antonio Water System (SAWS) rates by 27%, effectively denying the plan as is. Current rates will remain in place, and SAWS is expected to return to Council with a new proposal later this year.

Councilmember Alderete Gavito stated, “I'm glad the Council stopped the rate increase today. Slowing this down was the right call and will force SAWS back to the drawing board to address operational efficiencies.

“I have never been opposed to investing in our water system. However, SAWS can earn a yes by presenting a plan we can feel confident in, not by asking residents for blind trust — especially before an audit has been completed.

"Protecting the public’s money is a serious responsibility, and today was one more example of that."
