SAN ANTONIO (April 14, 2026) – District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo filed a Council Consideration Request (CCR), officially initiating the street renaming process to change César E. Chávez Blvd. back to Durango Blvd. following a robust community engagement process. According to a City of San Antonio news release, 64 percent of all survey respondents and 79 percent of residents living on César E. Chávez Blvd. supported reverting to Durango Blvd.

“Public spaces should reflect the community’s values and culture, and honor only upstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to San Antonio,” said the District 5 Councilmember. “Residents made it crystal clear that it was time for a change, and I am grateful for everyone’s feedback.”

According to the CCR, when this street was last renamed in 2011, residents and businesses located along this street were financially responsible for costs associated with the street name change. To provide a more stress-free process, the CCR calls on the City of San Antonio to reallocate and prioritize funds intended for the Fiscal Year 2026 César Chávez March towards the creation of a fund to assist residents and businesses located along this street with costs associated with a street name change, to include street sign replacement costs.

“This request provides a practical solution to ensure residents are not financially impacted by this decision,” said the District 5 Councilmember. “I anticipate a prompt process so the community can move forward and continue to take pride in the street they call home."

The Councilmember’s CCR requests inclusion of this item on the agenda of the earliest available meeting of the City’s Governance Committee.

Districts 1, 3, 4, and 6 signed on to the CCR in support.
