SAN ANTONIO (March 18, 2026) – Today, District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo submitted a memo requesting a series of community listening sessions, in partnership with the San Antonio American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), to gather public input on a potential renaming of W. César E. Chávez Boulevard.
These conversations will invite residents to share perspectives and help identify a potential new name that reflects the values and priorities of the District 5 community. As part of this effort, Council District 5 will also seek input on the future of the City of San Antonio’s César Chávez Day designation.
“This is about listening to our community and ensuring their voices guide decisions that shape our public spaces,” said Councilmember Teri Castillo. “We are committed to creating a transparent and inclusive process where residents can share their perspectives and help determine a path forward that reflects our community’s values.” This initiative follows community concerns regarding allegations associated with César Chávez. In response, Council District 5 is prioritizing an open, transparent process grounded in public engagement. The listening sessions are requested to take place during Spring 2026.
To ensure those most directly impacted are heard, District 5 is also proposing targeted outreach to residents and businesses located along W. César E. Chávez Boulevard, including a survey to collect input on the potential change.
