SAN ANTONIO (January 28, 2025) – The District 5 Office has filed a Holistic Traffic Calming Council Consideration Request (CCR). The policy request aims to foster collaboration across multiple departments, such as the Public Works, Transportation, and Planning departments, when traffic calming measures are necessary.

According to the 2024 Dangerous by Design report, San Antonio dropped out of the 20 most dangerous metro areas for pedestrians. While the drop may have been attributed to other municipalities becoming more dangerous for pedestrians, the City of San Antonio can build upon existing efforts to further minimize traffic-related injuries and deaths.

“During my tenure on Council, I regularly hear from District 5 residents over the need for more traffic calming measures to reduce speeding and protect lives,” Councilmember Teri Castillo said. “Dangerous streets affect so many parts of our public life. Speeding commuters shouldn't deter us from walking to school or our parks. With this proposal, we hope to spur additional safety measures into our Neighborhood Traffic Calming Handbook while developing a process where multiple City departments can provide their expertise so we effectively deliver on the safety our residents deserve.”

The request will now head to the earliest available Governance Committee meeting.
