District 5 Councilmember Files Request for Vacant and Nuisance Property Program and Policy Enhancements

SAN ANTONIO (November 3, 2025) – As the federal government shutdown continues, and only partial SNAP benefits are planned to be distributed, District 5 families, along with many across San Antonio, are facing growing uncertainty about how they’ll put food on the table.

District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo will host a food collection drive with Impacto Comunitario to help fill the gap for those affected by the federal government’s shutdown and reduced benefits. The event will take place on Saturday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Impacto Comunitario, 211 N. Park Blvd., 78204.

Across Bexar County, more than 130,000 families rely on SNAP to meet their nutritional needs. Councilmember Castillo’s priority is to ensure residents’ basic needs are met and no family goes hungry during this critical time.

“As the public votes whether to allocate hundreds of millions of tax dollars to a basketball arena, hundreds of thousands of people are scrambling to keep their families fed,” said Councilmember Castillo. “This food drive is meant to bring community members together in spirit of community solidarity.”

With tomorrow being election day, voters have a unique opportunity to reassess how public dollars are spent. The Councilmember’s food drive is a call to action, for neighbors to show up for one another and for leaders to put the well-being of working families at the forefront of every decision.
