District 4 Councilmember Helps Secure Leveraged Funding for Pearsall Park All-inclusive Adaptive Use Bicycle Track

SAN ANTONIO (January 23, 2026) – District 4 Councilmember Edward Mungia, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, continues to work on implementing the community-driven Pearsall Park Master Plan with the anticipated addition of a $3.4 million bicycle track. This project was recently awarded a $1.5 million Local Park (LP) Urban Outdoor Grant by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Additional funding totaling $1.9 million comes from the City of San Antonio’s 2022 Bond Program.

“For more than two decades, residents in the 78242 area have advocated for the creation of a regional park with state-of-the-art amenities that bring residents of all ages and abilities together to enjoy recreational activities and green spaces,” stated the District 4 Councilmember. “The new bike track and additional amenities at Pearsall Park will help enhance the quality of life of residents and attract visitors from across San Antonio to this regional 505-acre park.”

In 2022, 64.71% of San Antonio voters approved Proposition C, allocating $272 million for 82 parks, recreation and open space improvement projects as part of the 2022 Bond Program. One of the projects included is an all-inclusive adaptive-use bicycle track at Pearsall Park. The track design includes gravity-driven slopes, paved surfacing with ADA accessible starting gates, and riding challenges such as jumps, rollers and banked curves. The universal design will invite BMX, mountain bikes, recumbent bikes and be compatible with all-wheel non-motorized use.

“We’d like to thank the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for supporting the all-inclusive adaptive-use bicycle track project at Pearsall Park,” said Homer Garcia III, Director of San Antonio Parks and Recreation. “This grant award will augment a project whose universal design will invite a wide ridership from mountain bikes, recumbent bikes and more to San Antonio’s southside. We anticipate this track will be a top destination for local cyclists and visitors.”

The projects in the 2022 Bond Program were vetted and prioritized by the community and approved by City Council. City staff initially studied infrastructure needs throughout the community and developed a list of potential projects that were presented to five Community Bond Committees. The Committees submitted their list of recommended projects totaling $1.2 billion to the Mayor and City Council for consideration. Projects were approved in February 2022 and went before voters in the May 2022 election.

Other featured amenities currently at the park include a disc golf course, dog parks, a skate park, splash pads, walking trails, fitness stations, and an adventure course. The art installations, Wickiup Encampment and Wickiup Overlook, created by nationally recognized artist Buster Simpson, and Ujuālnān (Grand Sky), a 10-piece planetary sculpture installation created by artist Doroteo Garza representing the solar system, can also be found at Pearsall Park.
