SAN ANTONIO (October 31, 2024) –The following statement is from District 4 Councilmember Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia regarding the creation of the East-West Connector Major Thoroughfare Plan Realignment Project and the allocation of $250,000 from the Economic Development Incentive Fund:

“South San Antonio continues to attract major manufacturing employers and new residential development. The growth in the area provides us with an opportunity to plan for responsible development that is responsive to the needs of current and future residents, employees, and employers. The idea of an East-West connector in the southern sector has been discussed in the past to connect IH-35 to IH-37, two important routes in our regional economy, but no real plans have surfaced.

“Today’s vote in support of a feasibility study marks a step forward in our continued efforts to spur more economic investments and greater opportunities for those who work and live in south San Antonio. By working collaboratively alongside our industry partners like International, Toyota and JCB Texas, we hope to identify roadway alternatives that allow for greater connectivity and mobility. This proactive approach to prepare for future growth is also exemplified in our adoption of the City’s State Legislative Program for the 89th State Legislative Session, which highlights this new initiative.”

District 3 Councilmember Phylis Viagran echoed support to fund this feasibility study, stating, “Prioritizing a feasibility study for an East-West roadway in the Southern sector is critical in positioning San Antonio for continued economic growth. Initial discussions led by former District 3 Councilmember Rebecca Viagran, later joined by the District 4 Councilmember, set this vision in motion. Upon joining the City Council, I entered the conversation, and today am thrilled that our efforts, along with the full support of City Council, will lay the groundwork for future federal and state support, enhancing access, opportunity, and economic resilience across the region."
