SAN ANTONIO (June 18, 2026) – District 4 Councilmember Edward Mungia issued the following statement on the vote to delay an ordinance approving adjustments to the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) rates for the Residential, General, Irrigation, and Wholesale customers for 2026 through 2029:
“Delaying a vote on the proposed SAWS rate adjustment today means taking a measured and reasonable approach to a critical decision that impacts communities across San Antonio disparately. While there are infrastructure needs that must be addressed by SAWS, City Council has a responsibility to the residents who elected us to have confidence that the revenue generated by a potential rate increase produces the outcomes outlined by SAWS leadership with input from our communities and ratepayers. Far too often, we have been told that improvements will be made through past rate adjustments, and yet significant gaps remain.
“The discussions held in the last few months have led me to think that there are several outstanding concerns that SAWS should address through planning and measurable improvements. I am confident that the SAWS Board of Trustees and SAWS leadership, the President and CEO, will take this additional time to seriously consider the concerns the Council has raised.
