A Council Consideration Request was filed to rename the street to Willie Mitchell Drive.
SAN ANTONIO (April 13, 2026) — Councilmember McKee-Rodriguez filed a Council Consideration Request (CCR) to rename Splashtown Drive to Willie Mitchell Drive.
According to the request, Splashtown closed its operations in September 2021 after 37 years in business. Since then, the property has been redeveloped and the street name remains. The District 2 office met with stakeholders, including neighbors of the United Homeowners Improvement Association, and businesses to determine a more appropriate name that reflects the area and its history. District 2 states that nearby residential neighbors would like to honor an important member of this community, and the broader San Antonio community, by renaming the street to Willie Mitchell Drive.
The CCR goes on to state that Willie Mitchell was raised on the East Side of San Antonio and graduated from Wheatley High School. He played in Super Bowl I and performed in eight NFL seasons. Three years after losing in Super Bowl I, he and the Kansas City Chiefs returned and won Super Bowl IV. Following his football career, Mitchell helped start San Antonio Fighting Back, an organization committed to bettering the community with leadership and mentorship. According to the request, Willie Mitchell is a pillar in the East Side community and the designation would reflect his contributions.
“I’m proud to honor one of San Antonio’s own East Side heroes, Mr. Willie Mitchell, who not only demonstrated excellence and commitment in athletics, but also continues to make San Antonio proud by giving of his time and experience to continue serving as a leader here in our city,” said the District 2 Councilmember. “I hope this designation further reminds us of his example and serves as a source of inspiration for our community.”
The CCR was filed with supporting signatures from Councilmembers Sukh Kaur (District 1), Edward Mungia (District 4), Teri Castillo (District 5), and Ric Galvan (District 6). The next step in the process is a hearing of a staff recommendation at the next available Governance Committee meeting, at a date yet to be determined.
