SAN ANTONIO (October 9, 2025) — City Council has approved funding for a comprehensive San Antonio Fire Department Needs Assessment, originally requested through a Council Consideration Request (CCR) filed by the District 2 Councilmember on February 6, 2025.

The study, included in the Fiscal Year 2026 Adopted Budget, will evaluate the department’s staffing, equipment, facility, and resource needs to ensure equitable emergency response and readiness across all parts of the city.

The Councilmember said, “Public safety is one of the most essential services our City provides. This assessment will give us the data we need to invest wisely, identify gaps, and ensure that every neighborhood receives the highest standard of protection our firefighters are capable of. The initiative stems from long-standing community concerns about station coverage and response times.

“Our firefighters do incredible work every day, often under challenging conditions. By listening to their needs and planning for the future, we’re making sure they have the tools and staffing necessary to keep all residents safe.”

City staff will work with the Fire Department to conduct the study over the next year, with results expected to inform budget and facility planning for Fiscal Year 2027 and the 2027 Bond Program.

“This is about equity, safety, and preparedness,” McKee-Rodriguez said. “When every station has what it needs, every family can rest easier.”
