SAN ANTONIO (October 7, 2025) — Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez celebrates the grand re-opening of Healy Murphy Park, funded by the 2023 District 2 Capital Improvement Program.
Healy Murphy Park’s transformation into a first-of-its-kind street art park is the culmination of a years-long collaboration between the District 2 Office, Parks & Recreation Department, Arts & Culture Department, and San Antonio Street Art Initiative (SASA), who helped establish the design of the park and facilitated the artist selection process as a part of a Memorandum of Understanding with the aforementioned departments.
“Healy Murphy Park’s transformation is a testament to what’s possible when art, community, and public space come together,” said the Councilmember. “This park isn’t just a place to gather, but a living canvas that reflects the creativity, resilience, and beauty of our Eastside. I’m proud that District 2 continues to lead in redefining what public spaces can be when we invest in people and imagination.”
The park features ten original murals designed by ten artists, including District 2 artists Manola and Maria, Scotch!, Kat Cadena, Mauro de la Tierra, and Angelica Sanchez (Myth), in addition to San Antonio locals Josiah Harris, Ana Hernandez-Burwell, Alannah Tiller, Albert Gonzalez, and Deleted.
“This has been a labor of love years in the making. I’m deeply grateful to the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, our District 2 community, and every artist who helped turn this vision into reality,” continued the Councilmember. “Together, we’ve created something bold, beautiful, and uniquely ours, a park that tells our story through art.”
Originally established in the 1970s, Healy Murphy Park has long been a gathering space for Eastside residents. The reimagined design not only revitalizes the park’s infrastructure with new lighting and landscaping but also integrates street art as a central design feature, a first for a City of San Antonio park.
The park’s re-opening is also part of the Councilmember’s broader effort to activate five new parks across District 2. Village Row Park was built in 2023, and funds have been set aside from the Inner City TIRZ and the 2025 and 2026 Capital Improvement Programs to support the design and construction of additional parks throughout the district. Together, these projects reflect an ongoing commitment to expanding access to art, green space, and community amenities for all residents.
