SAN ANTONIO (August 13, 2026) — Today, City Council ordered an election for voters to consider reauthorizing the current 1/8 of a cent sales and use tax for the Pre-K 4 SA Program. The current authorization will expire in March of 2029 and, if approved in November, the ballot measure will extend the 1/8th- cent sales tax for a period of 20 years.

Pre-K 4 SA is a highly successful, nationally recognized program in early childhood education. Since the 2020 reauthorization, it has served 25,816 children. Young students who attend Pre-K 4 SA are more often prepared to enter kindergarten and continue to outperform their non-Pre-K 4 SA peers in standardized tests throughout their educational trajectory. The District 2 Councilmember issued the following statement:

“All children across San Antonio deserve to share in Pre-K 4 SA’s phenomenal success and today, we are one step closer to realizing that goal. If and when voters approve this measure, Pre-K 4 SA will have the stability and financial resources to continue providing high-quality Pre-K, Infant & Toddler Care, and partnerships, while expanding their reach.

“The research demonstrates that San Antonio needs to more than double the number of childcare seats, particularly infant and toddler care, and my hope is that this funding will allow us to close that gap. As a father, I’ve seen firsthand the overwhelming costs of childcare. Too many families are having to decide between joining the workforce and sacrificing an entire paycheck to afford childcare or staying home with their children and struggling to make ends meet.

“This is an amazing opportunity to improve the lives and outcomes of families for another generation, and I am prepared to work tirelessly to ensure this ballot measure is a success.”

The 20-year Pre-K 4 SA sales tax reauthorization will now go before voters on November 3, 2026.
