SAN ANTONIO (October 3, 2024) – Today, the City Council approved funding for the design of a new District 2 Senior Center at 4911 Lord Rd, concept master planning for affordable housing for seniors, and improvements to Copernicus Park and Community Center.

“Since 2021, one of my highest priorities has been the development of a new, stand-alone senior center for residents of District 2,” Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez said. “Seniors should be celebrated not just for what they’ve given and done in the past tense. They deserve to continue building new relationships, learning new things, and making new memories. We’re excited to be one step closer to the new, state-of-the-art facility that will be a hub for our seniors to continue doing all of those things.”

On June 27, 2024, the Council office held a community meeting at the District 2 Senior Center to discuss the new center with over 300 seniors showing up to share their ideas, vision, and excitement for its potential.

“This action today is a pivotal step forward in securing the community space our seniors deserve,” McKee-Rodriguez said. “With design set to take between 12-18 months, we anticipate this project will be shovel-ready ahead of the 2027 Bond program and will be prepared for many other funding opportunities. We will let no stone go unturned to make this Senior Center happen.”

The next steps include releasing the solicitation for the architect who will complete the facility's design and a subsequent community meeting with District 2 seniors.
