District 10 Councilmember Comments on Special Session Briefing About San Antonio Police Department Cooperation with Federal Agencies
SAN ANTONIO (January 22, 2026) – During today’s City Council Special Session briefing regarding San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) cooperation with federal agencies, Councilmember Whyte emphasized the importance of grounding the discussion in facts, legal clarity, and public safety rather than fear and confusion.
The District 10 Councilmember highlighted that local law enforcement’s mission remains protecting the public, stating, “SAPD’s involvement in immigration-related matters is driven strictly by an adherence to state and federal law. There has been no change in how SAPD patrols neighborhoods, responds to calls, or serves victims and witnesses. SAPD must cooperate with federal immigration enforcement activities for the well-being of our community.”
Councilmember Whyte also noted his support of comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level, stating, “We need a more efficient, fair, and just system. Congress is the only entity that can make the appropriate changes to immigration reform. We must find a balanced approach that provides a clear understanding of the law, protects our citizens, and emphasizes cooperation.”
