District 1 and Corazón Ministries Launch Sharps Collection Pilot Program
SAN ANTONIO (January 14, 2026) – The District 1 office and Corazón Ministries are proud to announce the launch of a Sharps Collection Pilot Program. This initiative provides accessible options for safe needle disposal as a first step toward connecting individuals struggling with addiction to support services. These continued efforts and investments align with the City of San Antonio’s recent declaration of Overdoses as a Public Health Crisis in November 2024.
As chair of the Public Safety Committee, District 1 Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur champions initiatives that leverage community-oriented tactics and improve residents’ quality of life. The pilot program, which included the installation of a sharps collection kiosk in late 2025, represents a proactive step to reduce the risks associated with improperly disposed syringes and support San Antonio’s most vulnerable populations.
“This effort is about compassion and public safety,” said Councilmember Kaur. “By providing safe disposal options, we’re protecting our entire community and providing access for those that may not yet feel comfortable with other public places for disposal. This partnership with Corazón Ministries underscores the importance of collaboration in creating a healthier and safer San Antonio. Sharps collection programs are part of Syringe Services Programs, which have been proven to be safe, effective, and reduce costs. Research collected for more than 30 years shows that these programs also reduce the transmission of infectious diseases like viral hepatitis and HIV while fostering public health improvements without increasing drug use or crime, according to the CDC.”
“Corazon Ministries is committed to fostering a safer and healthier community through compassion and evidence-based solutions,” said Madelein Santibanez, Senior Director of Harm Reduction and Health. “This Sharps Collection Pilot Program is a crucial step in enhancing public safety for all by reducing harm and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. By providing accessible and secure disposal options, we are minimizing the risk of accidental needle sticks and improper syringe disposal in public spaces such as parks, trash cans, and waterways. This helps protect families, children, and the broader community while raising awareness of vital health resources and support services.”
