SAN ANTONIO (November 5, 2026) — San Antonio City Councilwoman Misty Spears welcomed City Council’s approval of a resolution reaffirming the community’s support for Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and its role as the region’s only Level I trauma center. The approved resolution recognizes the importance of protecting BAMC’s military medical readiness mission and ensuring it maintains the patient volume and complex trauma cases needed to train military medical professionals.

“This resolution makes it clear that San Antonio stands behind BAMC. We have heard directly from senior military leadership about the importance of maintaining the patient volume and complex trauma cases necessary to support its military medical training mission. Protecting that capability is critical to BAMC’s future and to the military medical professionals who depend on it for their training,” said Councilwoman Spears.

BAMC is the Department of Defense’s only Level I trauma center within the military health care system. By caring for civilians with severe, life-threatening injuries, it plays a critical role in preparing military physicians, nurses and medics to treat severe injuries in combat. The approved resolution calls for regional coordination and a data-driven approach to evaluating changes in trauma care capacity, with consideration for BAMC’s long-term needs.

“This is about more than one hospital. BAMC serves our civilian community, supports our regional health care system and prepares the medical professionals our military depends on. We must consider the impact that decisions about trauma care will have on this mission and make sure BAMC can continue serving San Antonio and our nation,” the District 9 Councilwoman said.

The District 9 Councilwoman emphasized that City Council’s action reinforces San Antonio’s commitment to its military community and the missions that make this Military City USA.

“BAMC is an important part of our community, our local economy and our nation’s military readiness. I will continue working to protect its mission and ensure it remains a vital part of San Antonio for generations to come,” the District 9 Councilwoman said.
