SAN ANTONIO (October 6, 2026) – Councilmember Ivalis Meza Gonzalez released the following statement regarding the Mayor’s proposed framework for San Antonio’s 2027–2032 Bond:

“A citywide bond requires citywide support. The Mayor is appreciated for putting forward a framework that recognizes the fiscal realities facing our City. But as the Councilmember for District 8, a responsibility is to make sure the needs of the residents are not overlooked in a citywide investment of this magnitude.

“District 8 continues to grow—not only in population, but also as a center for business, education, healthcare, and economic development. We are home to two of San Antonio’s strongest economic engines, UT San Antonio and the Medical Center, and that growth brings real infrastructure needs. Our residents rely on the streets, drainage systems, sidewalks, parks, public facilities, and basic infrastructure that a bond program is intended to strengthen.

“A citywide bond should give residents across San Antonio confidence that their priorities have been considered and their needs fairly evaluated. Predetermining that 85% of available funding will go to half the city before individual projects have been fully evaluated makes that difficult and is not a framework I can support as currently presented.

“Bond programs give us an important opportunity every five years to make long-term investments in our communities. District 8 has an opportunity to be part of that investment and, just as importantly, our residents have an opportunity to have a voice in determining which projects move forward.

“That is exactly why I continue to call for the immediate establishment of a Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee and the appointment of residents, including the proposed tri-chairs. Before Council commits to predetermined allocations, residents should have a meaningful seat at the table and an opportunity to evaluate projects based on demonstrated need, urgency, impact, and citywide priorities.”
