D8 Councilmember Supports Appointment of Jesse Salame as SAPD Chief

SAN ANTONIO (September 2, 2026) – Following the appointment of Jesse Salame as Chief of Police of the San Antonio Police Department, Councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzalez released the following statement:

“I am pleased to support the appointment of Chief Jesse Salame to lead the San Antonio Police Department. Chief Salame brings nearly three decades of service to SAPD, along with the institutional knowledge, leadership experience, and deep understanding of our community that this important role demands.

“As a native San Antonian who has risen through the ranks of the department, Chief Salame understands both the challenges our officers face and the expectations our residents have for safe neighborhoods, strong community relationships, and accountable policing.

“Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a commitment not only to public safety, but also to officer wellness, mental health response, recruitment, and strengthening trust with the communities SAPD serves.

“We also recognize District 8 representatives Howard Feinberg and Art Saldaña for their service on the Community Stakeholder Roundtable during this important process. Their time, perspective, and commitment to helping identify the right leader for SAPD are greatly appreciated.
