SAN ANTONIO (October 29, 2026) – District 6 Councilmember Ric Galvan released the following statement on the San Antonio City Council’s 9-2 vote to pass his proposed data center regulations today, a year to the day from his original Council Consideration Request.
Councilmember Galvan stated, “The approved regulations make progress toward addressing longstanding concerns from residents, particularly in District 6 on San Antonio’s far Northwest side, where a majority of the city’s data centers currently operate. Efforts to address the rapid growth of data centers in San Antonio began with a Council Consideration Request in 2025 that examined the industry’s potential impacts on the city’s natural resources, infrastructure, and quality of life for surrounding residential neighborhoods.
“When one of the largest and wealthiest industries in the world has the potential to negatively impact San Antonio’s water sources, energy usage, neighborhoods, and quality of life, the residents of San Antonio deserve to have a say. We understand the role data center development plays in increasing San Antonio’s economic and energy future, but growth must come with responsibility. Development cannot come at the expense of the working-class families who call San Antonio home. We must make sure residents are protected, developers are held to clear standards for worker benefits, and community concerns are considered before decisions are made — not after the fact. I will continue working to ensure San Antonio grows responsibly, protects its natural resources, and puts the health and integrity of working families first.
“Today’s action is an important step in an ongoing effort to modernize the City’s development policies and respond to the concerns of local San Antonians. As implementation moves forward, continued oversight and public engagement will be essential to ensuring the adopted regulations deliver meaningful protections for neighborhoods across the city.”
