SAN ANTONIO (August 8, 2024) – Today, City Council voted on placing several City Charter amendment propositions onto the November election ballot for the voters of San Antonio to decide upon. Despite Councilmember Whyte's opposition to raising Council compensation and lengthening terms from two to four years, all six proposed charter amendments will appear on November's ballot.
“I’m strongly opposed to raising council compensation or extending our terms,” Councilmember Whyte said. “No additional tax dollars should be spent on Councilmembers’ compensation. Further, City Council is the closest level of government to the people, and thus it should remain subject to the will of the people every two years. With that said, I look forward to the voters’ decisions on these propositions in November, and I commend the Charter Review Commission on all of its hard work.”
Council also discussed the possibility of future Charter amendments. “I hope that in the future we look at an amendment by which we can control what City Council spends taxpayer dollars on,” the Councilmember added. “This Council needs to be limited to only spending money on core municipal services, and a charter amendment to that effect would greatly benefit our citizens.”
These City Charter amendments will be voted on by the public on November 5, 2024.
