D10 Councilman celebrates Homestead Exemption increase

SAN ANTONIO (June 22, 2023) - Today City Council voted to double the City’s portion of the Homestead Property Tax Exemption to 20%, the maximum allowed by state law. Councilman Marc Whyte offered the following statement:

“To say that I am thrilled about the opportunity to maximize the City’s portion of the Homestead Exemption. For the past six years, a determined effort of my District 10 predecessor led on the issue of establishing and growing a city-wide homestead exemption. With property values skyrocketing, there is no better time than the present to give our hard-working neighbors property tax relief. Today’s action by our City Council is a step in the right direction, but it is not enough. We must now work in collaboration with all the other taxing entities, including our friends at the County and State levels, for additional property tax relief that will ensure our neighbors are not priced out of their homes.

Thank you to the City Council for recognizing the importance of making today’s tax relief a reality for our residents. This was long overdue. Property tax relief will remain a top priority, and I will work tireless to continue making progress on this issue for our community.”
