SAN ANTONIO (June 1, 2026) – To kick off Pride Month, District 1 Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur filed a Council Consideration Request (CCR) today to designate a portion of North Main Avenue as “Erica Andrews Memorial Way” to honor the life and legacy of the internationally-renowned transgender performer.

Community advocates approached the District 1 Office to push for the commemorative effort, noting Andrews’ role as a cultural trailblazer prior to her death in 2013.

“This designation is about highlighting an important part of San Antonio’s history,” said Councilmember Kaur. “Erica Andrews was not only a groundbreaking performer on the international stage; she was a mentor, a community builder, and a source of visibility and pride for generations of LGBTQ+ individuals in San Antonio and beyond.”

According to the CCR, Andrews lived in San Antonio between 1992 and 2012, and became a well-known figure in the LGBTQ+ community as a transgender drag performer and mentor. She was influential across drag pageantry, film, and television, and in 2006 won the title of Miss International Queen in Thailand. She was also the matriarch of the Andrews drag family, which includes Roxxxy Andrews, a two-time contestant within the RuPaul's Drag Race universe.

“While transgender rights are increasingly under scrutiny across the state and nation, San Antonio has an opportunity to affirm its values of inclusion and recognition,” the Councilmember added. “This memorial designation is a visible reminder that transgender people have helped shape our city and its culture.”

The designation would not change the official street name or mailing addresses.

“Her life represents resilience, visibility, and the power of living authentically in the face of adversity,” said Equality Texas CEO Brad Pritchett. “At a time when transgender Texans continue to face hostility and erasure, this act of remembrance would affirm that Erica Andrews’ legacy is worthy of honor, pride, and permanence.”

If approved by City Council, commemorative signage would be added on North Main Avenue between East Cypress and East Ashby Place in the Pride Cultural Heritage District. The City’s Office of Historic Preservation noted Andrews as a local advocate when the district, the first of its kind in Texas, was approved in 2025.

“This memorial designation for Erica Andrews is an act of civic courage as much as it is an act of remembrance,” said Lex Loro, Executive Director of Pride Center San Antonio.

The proposal requests that the symbolic tribute be formally considered at the next available Governance Committee meeting.
