The first of two new spay and neuter facilities coming to San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (April 22, 2025) – Today, San Antonio City Councilmembers Dr. Sukh Kaur (D1), Teri Castillo (D5) and Marina Alderete Gavito (D7) joined San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) to celebrate the ribbon cutting for the new Animal Care Services Spay-Neuter Clinic-West.

The new facility is located at the Las Palmas Shopping Center at 803 Castroville Rd, Suite 120, and will serve as a spay and neuter hub for residents across the Westside of San Antonio.

After touring the new clinic, Councilmember Teri Castillo stated, “This new Spay-Neuter Clinic-West will be a vital resource for the Westside and our District 5 residents. We are grateful for its prime accessible location at the Las Palmas Shopping Center. We know that expanding our access for spay and neuter services is a proactive measure that will reduce the amount of pets roaming throughout San Antonio, leading to safer streets, neighborhoods, and public safety. I am grateful that this Council has prioritized infusing our Animal Care Services Department with the resources to hire more personnel and open this City-run clinic.”

Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito added, “Bringing this much-needed resource to residents of Districts 7, 5, and 1 has been a top priority for me, and today marks a major milestone for our community. This clinic will serve families across the inner Westside and is a big step forward in supporting our neighborhoods and expanding access to essential pet resources. Spaying and neutering pets addresses the root cause of San Antonio’s stray dog and pet overpopulation challenges, and we’re proud to be part of a long-term solution. We’re deeply grateful to our Council colleagues, Animal Care Services, and Assistant City Manager David McCary for helping bring this vision to life.”

Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur stated, "This opportunity to open the first City-run spay and neuter clinic on the Westside of San Antonio marks a major step forward—not just in services, but in education and visibility. By working in partnership with the City and Animal Care Services, we’re bringing critical resources directly into the community, making it easier for residents to access what they need. My hope is that this clinic becomes the beginning of long-term change—helping reduce the loose dog population and creating more opportunities for outreach, education, and support for our neighborhoods."

During the 2024 budget, City Council funded two new clinics (one on the Westside and one on the Eastside) during the amendment process. The following year, $2.7 million and 21 positions were added to operate the two new facilities. The addition of the Spay-Neuter Clinic-West and East will provide between 7,000 and 8,000 free and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, which will help SAACS reach its goal to complete over 41,000 surgeries for this year.

Animal Care Services Director Jon Gary stated, "We’re incredibly grateful to our city leaders for their investment in San Antonio's animal welfare. Thanks to their continued commitment, the new spay-neuter clinics will help us build a healthier, safer community for both pets and people.”

The City-run clinics are going online with plenty of warmer months on the horizon, which means more puppies and kittens in San Antonio. According to SAACS, spaying and neutering pets allows them to enjoy a longer healthier life, deter pet overpopulation, and reduce the likelihood of pets roaming away from home.
