City must keep talking and keep moving forward.
SAN ANTONIO (August 8, 2025) — In the Wednesday, August 6 B Session of the San Antonio City Council, a majority of Councilmembers voiced support for City Manager Erik Walsh to move forward with negotiating a term sheet with the San Antonio Spurs for the proposed Sports & Entertainment District.
District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito expressed concerns with further delaying the process, stating, “We have been clear – we are ready to move forward with term negotiations and bring this to a Council vote before the end of August.”
“I’ll continue working with a majority of colleagues to push this over the finish line,” said the District 7 Councilmember. “I remain open to further discussions with the Spurs to ensure we get the best deal for San Antonio.”
“This initial agreement poses little to no risk to the City and presents a real opportunity to strengthen a valuable, long-term partnership. The Spurs have agreed to cover any cost overruns on the project, which is a clear sign that we’re negotiating with a partner acting in good faith.”
On August 5, the Bexar County Commissioners’ Court voted to call for a county-wide election in November to decide whether the County’s tax revenue will be invested in the downtown Spurs arena.
“With less than three months until the November 4 election, the City must present a clear, transparent deal as soon as possible to give residents the information they deserve. We have no time to waste. We must keep our foot on the gas,” the Councilmember said.
“The City has momentum, public interest is high, and a majority of Council is ready to move forward.
“The Spurs have invested in San Antonio for over 50 years. Their brand is deeply intertwined with our city’s identity. We cannot afford to lose them.”
