SAN ANTONIO (March 20, 2025) – District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito is leading an initiative to support educators and school staff in response to ongoing teacher shortages, budget constraints, and legislative pressures affecting local schools.

Recognizing that the responsibility for systemic change largely rests with state government and local school boards, Councilmember Alderete Gavito is advocating the City of San Antonio should seek to contribute by implementing supportive measures that alleviate some of the burdens placed on teachers and school staff.

The proposed plan includes:

  • Partnering with Local Businesses: Offering discounts to teachers, with proposed “Teacher-Friendly Business” designations.
  • Supporting Teacher Well-Being: Advocating for policies that promote a healthier work environment and prioritizing teacher-supportive legislation on San Antonio’s State and Federal legislative agendas.
  • Teacher Advocacy: Ensuring City Council receives bi-annual updates from the COSA Commission on Education to keep education support a priority.

“Our educators shape the future of our community, and we must do our part to support them,” said Councilmember Alderete Gavito. “This initiative ensures that San Antonio stands with its teachers through action, not just words.”

The City Council welcomes input from educators, business leaders, and community members. This Council Consideration Request has the supporting signatures from Councilmembers Teri Castillo, John Courage, Manny Pelaez, and Marc Whyte.
