The Public Health Accreditation Board recognizes this achievement.
SAN ANTONIO (November 26, 2025) – The City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed a review process to achieve national reaccreditation as recognized by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Metro Health achieved an initial accreditation status in 2019. In maintaining this voluntary designation for another five years, Metro Health has demonstrated that it meets PHAB’s rigorous standards and measures and continues to evolve, improve, and advance its work to prevent disease, and to protect and promote the health of San Antonio and the greater Bexar County community.
Metro Health serves as the community’s first line of defense by assessing emerging health trends and building strong systems and partnerships. As a result, risks are identified early, and emergencies are met with preparedness.
“This reaccreditation demonstrates Metro Health’s commitment to national standards and reinforces the City’s strong investment in advancing public health infrastructure through close collaboration with community partners and regional agencies to build a healthier San Antonio,” said City Manager Erik Walsh. “Prioritizing thoughtful engagement based on best practices helps us respond to the evolving health needs of our community.”
Metro Health turns scientific insight into action to safeguard the community. “Through national reaccreditation, we reaffirm our commitment to assuring the conditions where all can be healthy, especially our most vulnerable populations,” said Metro Health Director Dr. Claude A. Jacob. “Being an accredited local health department strengthens Metro Health’s accountability to our community, reinforces a culture of quality improvement, raises our performance to advance public health practice and enhances our programs and services through evidence-based practices and data-driven decision-making.”
Reaccreditation by PHAB occurs after a five-year cycle and demonstrates that a health department remains aligned with PHAB’s evidence-based standards, which are Foundational Public Health Services and 10 Essential Services of Public Health. PHAB is a national non-profit organization that evaluates public health departments to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation. Achieving this status signals Metro Health’s dedication to quality improvement, accountability, and using data-driven decision-making to guide its programs and services. Metro Health works to protect, promote and improve the health of everyone in San Antonio and the greater Bexar County community.
