SAN ANTONIO (September 15, 2026) – Today, the City of San Antonio proudly unveiled a new sculpture at the Municipal Archives & Records Center honoring the building’s namesake, George Whitfield Jr., who served as the City’s first Records Manager. The commemorative piece pays tribute to Mr. Whitfield’s vision to establish a facility dedicated to housing the City’s records.

“The Municipal Archives & Records Center houses the most important records for the residents of San Antonio, from birth and death certificates to the official historical documents of the City of San Antonio,” said City Clerk Debbie Racca‑Sittre. “The vision for the sculpture was from local arts collective Bridge Projects, who wanted to feature a silhouette of a signature of a historical person. It seemed fitting that Mr. George Whitfield Jr.’s name should be the one to welcome visitors to this important place.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Whitfield was known for his dedication, integrity, and passion for making records accessible to the public. His contributions to maintaining, organizing, and safeguarding municipal records have left a lasting impact on the accessibility and preservation of San Antonio’s governmental history. While the facility was named after him in 2002, the sculpture now stands as a symbol of the work performed by countless City employees every day.
