SAN ANTONIO (April 7, 2026) – The City of San Antonio received strong community participation in a one-minute survey conducted March 23 through April 2 to gather input on the potential renaming of César E. Chávez Boulevard between Southwest 36th Street and South Hackberry Street. Outreach was conducted citywide, with a focused effort to engage residents living along the corridor.

A total of 18,029 responses were received, representing all Council Districts. Engagement averaged about 1,000 responses per district, with the highest participation from districts 1, 7, and 9.

Overall, 64% of respondents supported changing the name back to Durango Boulevard, while 36% suggested alternative names. Among residents living on César Chávez Boulevard, 79% expressed support for reverting to Durango Boulevard.

The City considers street name changes only for significant reasons, and any proposed names should reflect the character and history of the surrounding community.

Two informal community listening sessions are scheduled this week to gather additional input:

  • Wednesday, April 8, 6 – 8 p.m.
    Jaime’s Place, 1514 W. Commerce St., 78207
  • Saturday, April 11, 3 – 5 p.m.
    Tony G’s Soul Food, 915 S. Hackberry St., 78210

These come-as-you-are sessions will provide an opportunity for residents to share feedback, ask questions, and speak directly with City staff.

The City thanks all residents who participated in the survey. Community input plays a vital role in this process.
