City Launches New Public Safety Campaign to Prevent Traffic-Related Pedestrian Fatalities
SAN ANTONIO (November 17, 2025) – The City of San Antonio is launching its new public safety initiative, “Keep Crossings SAfe,” to address driver and pedestrian safety along three of the city’s High-Injury Network (HIN) corridors: Zarzamora Street, Fredericksburg Road and W.W. White Road. This campaign is part of the City’s continued efforts to reduce serious crashes and prevent fatalities on local streets through education, awareness and community engagement. By utilizing silhouettes that represent the real people of the community, the Transportation Department hopes to raise awareness that those crossing the streets could be any of us or our loved ones.
“The images contained in this crosswalk safety campaign will have an impact because they are relatable and eye-catching,” said Catherine “Cat” Hernandez, Director of Transportation. “You empathize because it resembles your sister, your mother, a family member, while providing a message of safety for all road users.”
According to TxDOT data, in the San Antonio area last year, there were 769 traffic crashes involving pedestrians, resulting in 83 fatalities and 168 serious injuries. A recent study also ranked San Antonio as the seventh deadliest city in the nation for pedestrians, emphasizing the need for stronger public awareness and prevention efforts.
The campaign will focus on high-risk behaviors that contribute to severe crashes, such as not crossing at designated crosswalks, distracted driving and speeding. Many pedestrian fatalities occur when individuals cross outside of designated crosswalks, particularly on high-speed corridors. To address this issue, the Transportation Department has begun designing mid-block crossings along Zarzamora Street, as part of the Safe Streets for All Grant (SS4A). The City urges residents to always use marked crossings, obey traffic signals and remain visible to drivers when walking, especially at night.
The “Keep Crossings SAfe” initiative underscores San Antonio’s ongoing commitment to building safer streets, support Vision Zero efforts and protect everyone who lives, works and travels in our city.
