City Council Approves the Renaming of the San Antonio Natatoriumin Honor of Local Advocate – Atanacio Garcia

SAN ANTONIO (March 20, 2025) – Today, City Council unanimously approved the renaming of the San Antonio Natatorium in remembrance of Atanacio Garcia, the community member who rallied and organized the community in support of the Olympic-sized community pool in the Westside of District 5.

“Atanacio Garcia was a tireless advocate for his community, renaming the Natatorium with his namesake will permanently honor his efforts to bring a community pool to the Westside,” Councilmember Teri Castillo stated. “San Antonio is forever indebted to his community organizing, and now everyone who visits the Natatorium will forever know his name.”

The Parks and Recreation Department and the District 5 Office hosted a community input meeting in February where Atanacio’s family and friends gathered in support of the renaming. Original copies of his petitions and letters to local leaders were displayed for public viewing to emphasize his efforts for the establishment of the San Antonio Natatorium.

“We’re proud to honor the legacy of Atanacio Garcia who was a person committed to community and service,” said Homer Garcia III, San Antonio Parks and Recreation Director. “Through his leadership and initiative, we have a wonderful indoor swimming facility which the community enjoys year round. This gem continues to serve families in the West Side and across the city.”
