SAN ANTONIO (September 10, 2026) – Today, the San Antonio City Council approved an ordinance strengthening accountability and oversight of the City’s boards and commissions.

The ordinance, brought forward following a Council Consideration Request from Councilman Whyte, establishes a two-year review cycle to ensure boards and commissions remain active, effective, and aligned with their intended purpose.

Under the new process, an ad hoc City Council committee will evaluate boards based on factors including attendance, meeting activity, mission relevance, deliverables, potential duplication, and community impact. Newly appointed board members will also be required to complete Municipal Leadership Institute training within 90 days of their appointment.

“Until now, San Antonio did not have a defined timeline or consistent standards for evaluating whether boards are still meeting their intended purpose,” said Councilman Whyte. “This ordinance brings accountability to that process and gives the City a clear path to consolidate or sunset boards when they are no longer serving a necessary function.

“This is a simple step toward better accountability and a more effective local government,” said Whyte. “Regularly reviewing how our boards operate allows us to recognize what is working, address what is not, and make sure we are being good stewards of public dollars.”
