City Celebrates New Affordable Multi-Family Development

SAN ANTONIO (July 8, 2025) – The City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Housing Trust, and partners celebrated the opening of SunstoneApartments deep in the city’s West Side. The new affordable housing community will feature 199 apartments for households earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), or $52,200 per year for a family of three. Sunstone is the seventh affordable home development to fully open with support of the voter-backed 2022 Affordable Housing Bond.
Located near the intersection of Culebra and Callaghan roads, Sunstone Apartments is a $43.7 million investment in the West Side, with theAffordable Housing Bond contributing $1.7 million of the cost. The community was developed by the San Antonio Housing Trust and Pavilion Construction and is managed by Greystar Property Management.
“The role of government is to put its people first, and that means investing in housing our community with dignity. Sunstone, and all that this development offers, is a testament to that sentiment. It shows what’s possible when we prioritize public good over private profit," District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo said. "I give my sincere thanks to Neighborhood and Housing Services, San Antonio Housing Trust, and all who helped bring this development to life for the families of San Antonio.”
The 199-unit development will provide 21 homes for households earning up to 30% AMI and 178 homes for households earning up to 60%AMI. The community features onsite resident services such as after-school programs, health and wellness services, and more. Amenities include outdoor recreation areas, sports courts, fully accessible pedestrian routes, and a swimming pool. Sunstone is designed to meet Energy Star standards with LED lighting and Build San Antonio Green Level II certifications.

The San Antonio Housing Trust is grateful for the City’s commitment to invest in affordable housing on the Westside,” Pete Alaniz, Executive Director for the San Antonio Housing Trust said.
As of June 2025, the voter-approved 2022-2027 Affordable Housing Bond has committed $127.8 million (approximately 85%) of its $150 million bond allotment. More than 5,000 homes in San Antonio have now been produced, rehabilitated, or are in progress with support of theAffordable Housing Bond.
