SAN ANTONIO (July 2, 2025) — At the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) Board of Trustees’ meeting on June 25, they voted unanimously to approve the final design for the City of San Antonio Bond-funded renovation project at the Carver Branch Library. The building will be expanded to include a new community meeting space. Other renovation elements for the library include exterior improvements for curb appeal, the addition of service spaces, such as a new African American Resource Center and SAPL’s very first dedicated tween space for children ages nine through 12, and other building and system improvements.
“I am excited that we have achieved this important milestone in the transformative renovation of the historic Carver Branch Library,” said Library Director Sukrit Goswami. “In the coming months, we will begin the process of renovating this beloved Eastside asset into a state-of-the-art library that blends history and community connection with technology and thoughtful architectural design. I am grateful to the Carver Branch Library community, who have provided feedback at each step of the process to help develop Carver’s future collaboratively.”
The board also approved closing the branch starting on August 11, 2025, for renovations. The last day of service at Carver Branch Library before the renovation will be August 10, 2025. Interim service for Carver patrons will be available at a nearby location. Details will be announced once those plans are finalized.
The $12.8 million project includes $12.5 million for renovations and $300,000 for public art. Funding for both comes from the 2022 voter-approved City of San Antonio Bond.
The library, in collaboration with City Council District 2 and the Public Works Department, sought input and feedback throughout the development of the Carver Branch Library Bond renovation project. Community members provided important feedback at two public meetings, via stakeholder sessions, by direct engagement with library administration, and through paper and online surveys. The design team used the feedback to develop the final design for the renovation of the Carver Branch Library.
