Event to feature free family activities before the Carver closes for renovation.

SAN ANTONIO (July 30, 2025) — The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) will host a celebration on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the 95th Anniversary of the Carver Branch Library, 3350 E. Commerce St., 78220.

Join SAPL for a history-themed anniversary event celebrating nearly a century of service to the city’s Eastside. The celebration will kick off with a speaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m., followed by free, family-friendly activities from 11 a.m. to noon. Activities will include a photo booth, Community Story Hour, children’s Story Time, arts and crafts, a community resource fair, and preservation demonstrations from SAPL’s Texana special collections staff.

Following the celebration, the library will close for renovations starting Monday, Aug. 11, 2025. The $12.8 million project includes $12.5 million for renovations and $300,000 for public art. Funding for both comes from the 2022 voter-approved City of San Antonio Bond.

The building will be expanded to include a new community space. Other renovation elements for the library include exterior improvements for curb appeal and the addition of service spaces, such as a new African American Resource Center and SAPL’s first dedicated tween space for children ages nine through 12.

During the closure, library services will be available at the Denver Heights Community Center at 300 Porter St., 78210. Patrons can pick up and return materials, use public computers and browse the library’s collection at this interim location.

The first library on the East side of San Antonio was established by black soldiers in a small, wooden building at Fort Sam Houston during World War I. The library was later moved to a single room in what is today known as the Carver Cultural Center on Hackberry Street. The current building, designed by architect Norcell D. Haywood, opened in 1973.
