Tree Care

A person hugs a tree forming a heart shape with their hands.

Caring for trees is simple, and a little guidance can make a big difference. Whether you just planted a sapling or are looking after a more established tree, these quick guides and videos will help you give your tree the best chance to thrive.

Planting a Tree

Planting correctly sets your tree up for a lifetime of health.

  1. Dig a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball but only as deep.
  2. Place the tree so the root flare, where the trunk meets the roots, sits just above the soil surface.
  3. Backfill gently, water thoroughly, and add two to three inches of mulch around the base while keeping it away from the trunk.

Watering a Small Tree

Young trees need consistent water to establish strong roots. Follow the 3-2-1 schedule:

First Month
Water three times per week, providing about one to three gallons each time.
Second Month
Water twice per week.
Third Month
Water once per week.
After Six Months
Water two to four times per month, depending on the weather, for the next three years.

The best method is a slow trickle from a hose or a bucket with small holes that allows water to seep gradually into the soil. Focus the water at the root zone, not directly on the trunk.

Watering a Big Tree

For newly planted larger trees, such as those provided through the CommuniTree program, you may see a green water bag around the trunk. Follow the same 3-2-1 schedule for watering:

First Month
Fill the bag three times per week.
Second Month
Fill the bag twice per week.
Third Month
Fill the bag once per week.
After Six Months
Water two to four times per month, depending on the weather, for the next three years.

This gradual schedule helps your tree build deep, resilient roots.

Ongoing Maintenance & Upkeep

Once your tree is established, a little care will keep it healthy for years:

Prune Carefully
Remove only dead, damaged, or weak branches. For bigger pruning jobs, hire a certified arborist.
Mulch Correctly
Keep a two to three inch mulch ring around your tree to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. Leave a gap around the trunk so it can breathe.
Water in Stressful Times
Mature trees still need water during droughts or extreme heat. Give them a deep soak every couple of weeks when rainfall is scarce.
Watch Closely
Look for pests, wilting, or unusual growth. Early attention helps trees recover more quickly.
