San Antonio to formalize Friendship City agreement with Baguio, Philippines


SAN ANTONIO (October 19, 2022) — Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Mayor Benjamin Magalong of Baguio, Philippines will sign a Friendship City Agreement this week as a delegation from the Filipino city visits San Antonio to commemorate the burgeoning relationship.
 
On Friday, Baguio will become the fourth international municipality that has a Friendship City Agreement with San Antonio, which also has Sister City Agreements with 11 cities around the world.
 
The Baguio delegation arrived Tuesday and will visit San Antonio through Saturday, learning about health care, social services, solid waste, and other government functions.

The San Antonio Mayor will officially welcome the delegation at the beginning of the City Council meeting on Thursday, and present a proclamation recognizing Filipino History Month.
 
The Filipino delegation will attend a welcome lunch Thursday hosted by the Alamo Asian American Chamber of Commerce and the University of the Incarnate Word. The lunch will feature an exchange of the cities’ economic profiles.
 
The two mayors will sign the Friendship City Agreement Friday night during a gala sponsored by the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Texas – Central Texas Region (PACC-CTR).
 
A Friendship City relationship is frequently the first step toward a more formal Sister City Agreement.  Friendship City relationships help communities explore and develop deeper cooperative relationships. The relationships foster citizen-to-citizen connections and play a role in economic development efforts as well as educational and cultural exchanges.
