Update on Animal Care Services, San Antonio Police Department investigation into a fatal dog attack on City’s westside

SAN ANTONIO (February 25, 2023) — San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) and the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) are investigating a dog attack that killed an 81-year-old man. A 74-year-old woman and two other men, including a San Antonio Fire Department Captain, were also injured in the attack. All three have been treated and released. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. in the 2800 block of Depla Street off Highway 90 and Cupples Road.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) in conjunction with investigators from the San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) have arrested the owner of dogs involved in a fatal attack yesterday afternoon.

31-year-old Christian Alexander Moreno of the 2800 block of Depla street was arrested by the SAPD, hours after the incident which left an 81-year-old man with fatal injuries. He faces multiple felony charges including Attack by Dangerous Dog Resulting in Death (2nd degree felony) and Injury to an Elderly Person by Omission or Negligence (State Jail Felony).

Three dogs, described as American Staffordshire Terriers, were initially taken into SAACS custody from the location. The two dogs confirmed to have participated in the attack were euthanized Friday evening while the third was euthanized Saturday. At least two of the animals have been involved in a pair of confirmed bite cases in the past including one in January of this year and another in September of 2021. SAACS bite investigators are determining if the dogs in question match the description of animals connected to any other incidents in the area. SAACS strongly urges all pet owners to keep their pets properly secured in their yard.

A large portion of bite cases that occur in San Antonio annually involve owned animals, many of which are illegally roaming off their property. Responsible pet ownership is mandated in the City of San Antonio’s Chapter 5 animal ordinance. The laws can be found at www.saacs.info/AnimalLaws
