Animal Care Services in desperate need of temporary homes for the holidays

SAN ANTONIO (December 22, 2022) – City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) has more than 50 pets, overwhelmingly dogs, in urgent need of temporary housing with foster volunteers through the end of the year. SAACS Foster Supervisor Justine Sanchez says the shelter typically houses and cares for more than 200 dogs and cats daily.

“Pets in need are brought in around the clock, seven days a week,” says Sanchez. “Without foster volunteers, many of these pets would not make it out of the shelter and into loving homes.”

The SAACS foster program provides families or individual volunteers with all the resources they need to foster pets in need, such as food, veterinary care, and supplies. Residents directly help pets who may have been abandoned or left to fend for themselves in the cold by fostering a pet in need.

Sanchez believes fosters save lives adding, “They help SAACS reduce capacity-related euthanasia due to overcrowding, of course, but they also help shelter dogs and cats learn what it means to be a family pet.”

At this time, both temporary and long-term foster volunteers are needed. Animal lovers who want to help should submit a foster application by visiting the SAACS website.
