Daily Nonstop Flights to Kansas City Return as San Antonio International Airport Celebrates Major Travel Records

San Antonio (Dec. 20, 2022) – As San Antonio International Airport (SAT) expects a record-breaking holiday travel season with more than a half million passengers over the next two weeks, a popular nonstop flight is coming back to SAT in 2023. This news also comes as SAT has achieved a major post-pandemic milestone: For the first time in the airport’s recovery, there were more passengers in November 2022 (856,336) compared to November 2019 (854,152).

That continued increase in passengers coincides with Southwest Airlines announcing it will resume daily service to Kansas City International Airport (MCI) starting on July 11.

Here’s what to know if you want to book a flight now:

  • The nonstop flights are 2 hours.
  • Flights will depart SAT at 11:35 a.m. and arrive at MCI at 1:35 p.m.
  • The return flights will depart MCI at 12:30 p.m. and arrive at SAT at 2:25 p.m.
  • Both flights will be operated by a Boeing 737 MAX8 aircraft with 175 seats.

“We are very excited to once again have consistent, daily nonstop service connecting San Antonio and Kansas City. This is a route that is very popular with business travelers as well as bringing tourists to our wonderful city,” said Jesus H. Saenz, Director of Airports, San Antonio Airport System.

Kansas City, known for its barbecue, live jazz music, art galleries, professional sports teams and NASCAR, has continued to be a popular destination for many Texans, too.

“These nonstop flights give our community easy access again to San Antonio’s rich history, diverse cuisine and charming River Walk,” said Pat Klein, director of the Kansas City Aviation Department.

Other important achievements at SAT for 2022 include:

  • United Airlines (UA) flew more passengers each of the past five months compared to 2019.
  • Allegiant (G4) also flew more passengers in November 2022 than in November 2019.
  • Other carriers came very close to those successes – including American Airlines (AA), which flew 96% of the passenger levels seen during November 2019, Delta Air Lines (DL) flew 97% and Southwest (WN) flew 98%.

In April 2022, Southwest also started new service to Oklahoma City (OKC). The airline also resumed seasonal service to Colorado Springs (COS).

Another boost in SAT’s increased passenger numbers came with Spirit Airlines’ launch into SAT in November 2022 with daily nonstop service to both Orlando (MCO) and Las Vegas (LAS). Additionally, Spirit’s new nonstop service to both Baltimore (BWI) and Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) begins on March 8, 2023.
