Artworks to explore theme of ‘Yesterday’s Dream, Today’s Vision, Tomorrow’s Reality’

SAN ANTONIO (October 20, 2023) – The City of San Antonio’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission (MLK Commission), in collaboration with the Department of Arts & Culture and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Department, today announced it has opened its ninth annual Student Art Contest to encourage youth to create original artwork that is inspired by the 2024 theme of “Yesterday’s Dream, Today’s Vision, Tomorrow’s Reality” developed by Devon Matthews. The deadline for entries is Monday, November 20, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. CST.

Open to current Bexar County residents, the selected artwork will be used on marketing materials to promote the 2024 March and Commemoration, which will take place on Monday, January 15, 2024. All contest guidelines and instructions can be found at SA.gov/MLK.

"One of my favorite events of the year is our annual MLK Art Competition,” said Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez. “Last year, we received a record number of submissions and we're sure this year even more students will be inspired by the theme, 'Yesterday's Dream, Today's Vision, Tomorrow's Reality.' I cannot wait to see what they came up with!"

The contest accepts any traditional two-dimensional artistic media including paintings, photography, computer graphics and artwork created with colored pencils, markers and crayons.

Since 1987, the City of San Antonio has celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an annual series of events leading up to one of the largest marches in the country. The panel of judges will review entries and determine the winner based on concept, artistic imagery, visual presentation and originality of the piece. Organizers will notify the winning individual and the Commission will make a public announcement at a later date.
