District 7 Councilwoman Chairs Final Meeting of Community Health, Environment, and Culture Committee
SAN ANTONIO (January 20, 2023) — Councilwoman Ana Sandoval chaired her final meeting of the Community Health, Environment, and Culture Committee on Thursday, and provided remarks of thanks to the committee during her tenure.
“Thank you to the members of this committee, past and present, for their passion and interest in those topics that have not often gotten center stage in City policy,” she said. “It has been exciting to shepherd impactful health, environmental, and equity policy work through this committee.”
The committee, originally named the Community Health & Equity Committee, was created by Mayor Ron Nirenberg at Councilwoman Sandoval’s request in 2017. It was originally charged with overseeing “policies, plans and programs that affect the quality of life of its residents… the protection and enhancement of the natural environment, public health, education, and the development of equitable social services… climate preparedness and resiliency, libraries, solid waste and recycling, parks, and other community-oriented services.”
The committee was renamed the Community Health, Environment, and Culture Committee in 2021 and its charge grew to include oversight of “activities related to the stewardship of San Antonio’s unique artistic, cultural, and historic heritage.”
The committee led the efforts to adopt the first Tobacco21 ordinance in Texas, pass a smoke-free parks policy, update boards and commissions policies, declare Racism a Public Health Crisis, and adopt a resolution supporting the Freedom to Read.
