Update Microchip Information

Cat getting scanned by a veterinarian

Registration Requirements

Registered microchips must show current ownership information including:

  • Owner name
  • Address
  • Phone number (if available)
  • Description of the pet

Microchips do not need to be registered with the City or Animal Care Services (ACS); microchips only need to be registered with microchip manufacturer.

Check your Information

We recommend that your pet’s microchip information is checked every year. It is necessary to update their registration any time you change your home address or contact number.

  • If you recently adopted a pet from our shelter, you can log into your account to update your information. ACS currently uses Found Animals Registry chips. View the Registry Information Flyer (PDF) for more details.
  • If you did not adopt a pet from our shelter, use your pet's microchip number and visit Pet Microchip Lookup. Enter your pet’s microchip number and the corresponding microchip company will pop up.
  • If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number or you are unsure if they're registered, visit your local vet clinic or shelter to get a free scan.

Microchip Manufacturers

If you know your pet's microchip number, you can contact the manufacturer to update your registration information.

Need a Microchip?

If you live in San Antonio, it is city law to have your dogs, cats, and ferrets microchipped and registered. Dogs must also wear an ID tag at all times while outdoors.

If your pet has not been microchipped yet, make an appointment (free for City residents).
